Shakespeare comes in many different forms at the Patrick O’Hearn School. While one child reads it with his eyes, another does so with fingers. One student interprets it with a drawing, another performs a skit. There is no uniform way to learn, and there is no single benchmark for success. But most children do succeed at this Dorchester elementary school. The philosophy is simple: “Wherever you are, we take you higher,” says Principal Bill Henderson. The nation still has ways to go in meeting …

this school is great. i went there in 4th and 5th grade and played kickball all day
i still get made fun of in middle school its hard to keep the friends i make now and its hard to make friends now i have aspergers syndrome i just want to be in the cdc class with down syndrome kids and stuff like that but they say im to high for that which i think i should be able to be in any special ed class i want the one that makes me feel comfortable
i get made fun of now even in high school and its hard for me to keep friends and i have aspergers syndrome
Posted in the wrong spot, sorry. The previous comment was in response to ladysweetlipz.
You are mistaken, but I don’t think I’ll be able to convince you. I’m glad you don’t get to decide school policy.
eh your not alone i’ev been made fun of in middle school and it sucks but when i went to high school it the whol getting made fun of stoped some made some friends that werent in any spec ed class but their are those dumb fucks that will start shit with you i just ignore them
This school is awesome. I believe Special Education students should never feel separated from other students their age. At this school, everyone is included. The physiological is amazing.
Im telling you! democracy does not work. it gives company’s, human rights. only humans have human rights.
im not a smart guy what so ever, i barely graduated high school and by luck, beacuse they lowered the passing grade. inclusion is lowering the passing grade for children!
but now in college, it is getting even harder to get a degree. conclusion “inclusion= leaving every child behind”
yeah, but i will show my nieces how to love, understand, apperciate, and accept others. but thats every parents job.
listen to what she says in 1:28
“it is not only the educational gold standard, but also the LAW”
ladysweetlipz,
That’s a real misconception some people have. Having disabled children in the classroom teaches and benefits all children, not only disabled children. I’ve watched inclusion work. Academics do not suffer, each child progresses and they all benefit.
There’s a lot more to learn than academics. Things like acceptance and support of your fellow student.
i have niece who is very smart! she learns very quickly!
i would hate for her to slow down her learning process. and just because it would save the school some money.
i agree that everyone has equal rights, and everyone should be treated equal, but thats the scheme to get what the school wants.
oh “democracy”
but i as an uncle say that it would not be fair for my nieces education and her future.

I was put into the ’speech program’ at my school…and although I had normal classes, I was looked at differently. I could talk, just not well. And I could communicate through words better than through verbal communication.
I wish I was given the same chances these kids have…but at least it’s here now.

“Wherever you are, we take you higher” Wonderful!!
All schools need to be this way! I’d give anything for my son who has high-functioning autism to have this incredible school model! How fantastic for both kids with special needs as well as the typically developed kids. Think of what loving, understanding, and tolerant adults they will grow up to be!
Awsome work I have a physical disability to I wish my school like this
